The Harriet Tubman Center for Freedom and Equity at ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ will celebrate Harriet Tubman Day with a special presentation from Michele Galvin, a great-great-grandniece of Tubman, from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, at the University Downtown Center, 67 Washington St., Binghamton. This event is free and open to the public.

Galvin is the author of Beyond the Underground: Aunt Harriet, Moses of Her People. The book tells the story of the famed abolitionist within the context of their family lineage, offering a personal perspective on the legendary abolitionist’s work before, during and after the Civil War.

The Tubman Center will also recognize the one-year anniversary of a statue built in Tubman’s honor. Created by Zoe Dufour, the statue features Tubman holding a lantern, symbolizing her as a beacon of hope and light in darkness. The statue is located at Tubman’s marker along the , a public trail denoting Underground Railroad stops and other anti-slavery and civil rights sites.
